The work has strong associations with childhood – an atmosphere of innocence and vulnerability, but also with the suggestion that things can be more sinister than they initially appear. Toys are used as stand-ins for reality, instruments of make believe and therefore can take on sinister connotations because they strike at the heart of perceived innocence.
